Helping private medicine create winning Cultures & Strategies

What is MiViVa?

Put simply, we’re a specialist consultancy set up to serve the private medical community and help support you in two of the most important things any business can have. Culture and Strategy.

We think these elements are so fundamental that we call them Foundational.

We recognise that running or setting-up a private medical practice is tough. There are many more choices and decisions to make within unfamiliar territory compared to the world of public medicine.

Do you even need these foundational culture and strategy elements? Well, it’s a bit like construction. You could build a house without foundations. It would be quicker and cheaper, but it wouldn’t last.

Culture and strategy are similar – you can’t actually see them like you can premises, staff, a website or so many of the tangible things in a business, but without them your business will be built on shifting sands. And some of the world’s most inspiring business minds are very clear – if you want your business to thrive, you MUST have a clear culture and strategy.

Is MiViVa for me?

If you’re a healthcare professional or clinic owner dedicated to the world of private medicine, (and success is important to you) then, yes. MiViVa is for you.

Whether you are just starting out or have been established for several years, try our simple Quick Check tool to see if MiViVa can help you. If you are in your first year of business we can provide a Bursary Assisted offer for savings of 50% (see the Terms and Conditions).

If you are just starting out, (or thinking of making the move), then your best course of action is to take the Foundational Culture Light Touch module. This takes the core elements of the three main modules and distils them down into a single module. But since you are less likely to have staff immediately, the module focuses predominantly on Creating a Culture for Success, (you’ll definitely need this), and gives you enough of a look at the Recruitment & Retention and Performance Management modules to understand if you need to invest more fully.

Setting up in private practice can be overwhelming and expensive. To support you as a new entrant to the industry you can access these modules at half price. Just add the Code NEW50 at check-out to access the Bursary Assisted scheme (Terms and Conditions apply).

Preliminary research shows that the majority of established private medical businesses don’t yet have a clear and deliberate foundational Culture or Strategy. But don’t worry – you’re not alone. Research by PwC’s Strategy& arm1 found that 70-79% of senior industry leaders, (from 6,000 surveyed), believed their strategy was not clear, differentiated or resourced well enough to beat their competitors. Two thirds also thought that their culture was holding them back from success. Of the leaders that got it right the results were impressive. Companies with good, clear strategies and aligned cultures are three times more likely to outpace the market growth and twice as likely to have above-average profits.

Take a look at how MiViVa can help your business.

Our Foundational Culture modules cover three key areas (plus a summary module for all three):

  1. Creating a Culture for Success
  2. Recruitment & Retention
  3. Performance Management
  4. Foundational Culture Light Touch

Our Strategy modules will be available later in 2021 and will cover all of the steps that you need to know and follow to create your own strategic plan. If you want to address this earlier please contact us for bespoke strategic consulting.

Mission, Vision & Values

The MiViVa brand is derived from Mission, Vision and Values – the three things that are key to a successful culture.

Support cultural & strategic self-sufficiency2 in private medicine

The concept of an apparently self-limiting Mission, (one that ends a work and revenue stream when achieved), seems paradoxical in business. It is based on the concept of an Abundance Mentality3 which considers there is enough to go around. This belief shifts the business relationship from a dependency, (where the service provider needs the client), to an interdependency, (where both parties flourish but are also open to other constructive business relationships).

This mindset is rooted in the Wet Bar of Soap™ analogy where both parties win. We believe it is beneficial to both our clients and us to convey all of the knowledge, skills and confidence to a client for them to feel self-sufficient. These clients might actually end up being our most powerful advertising.

Become the UK & Ireland’s most trusted enabler of foundational culture & strategy in private medicine

Ethics & Integrity: As an industry, healthcare demands the highest levels of ethics and integrity in order to earn trust. Without trust a business grinds to a halt. MiViVa will always do the right thing, even when it means walking away from an opportunity.

Service Quality: MiViVa takes pride in the quality of work and level of service. They will be routinely high.

Pragmatic Simplicity: We live in an imperfect world and our business approach will always focus on what is practical and implementable, rather than idealistic and theoretical. We can’t help you be self-sufficient if it’s not simple!

Leadership

MiViVa was founded by Stuart Rose in 2021 to support and guide leaders in private medicine to gain cultural & strategic self-sufficiency.

With over 35 years of experience in domestic and international pharmaceuticals, Stuart has worked for some of the world’s largest, (and smallest), businesses in sales, marketing and commercial leadership roles. His experience has equipped him to understand what makes a successful business and to identify the key things to get right as a business leader.

Stuart is a life sciences graduate, an alumnus of Cranfield School of Management, member of the Institute of Directors and an industry awards judge. His experience encompasses chairmanship of a not-for-profit organisation, steering board member of the UK’s Ethical Medicines Industry Group, marketing & leadership mentor and member of the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority Appeal Board. Latterly, Stuart led Merz Pharma in the UK & Ireland for thirteen years, (becoming one of the UK’s longest serving pharmaceutical company CEOs), where he oversaw the setting-up and growth of a highly successful business serving the private medical (aesthetics) market.

His experience in the industry has given Stuart immense depth in dealing with people, allowing him to hone his understanding and insights. Having interviewed over 2,500 candidates for a range of roles he has been able to track people’s careers and distil a set of skills and techniques to spot, nurture, develop and retain talent, creating the right environment to let it flourish.

It was his observations during this time, coupled with his learnings from two decades of commercial leadership and coaching, that led to the setting up of MiViVa. He is passionate about the impact that culture and strategy can have on a business and has seen, first hand, the tangible and very positive impact that they have on the bottom line.

The challenge

So what’s the problem?

For a highly trained healthcare professional operating in a private setting the focus is primarily on how to operationalise their skills & knowledge. Time is invested in premises, marketing, hiring, websites, pricing, cash-flow, VAT, profit & loss. These are all important and no business can succeed without doing these well. But they are so often conducted in the absence of a conscious culture and clearly defined strategy.

Why culture?

Peter Drucker, one of the world’s most influential names in business management once said “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” He didn’t mean that strategy was unimportant – far from it. A good strategy is key. What he meant was that without a strong culture that strategy would be unlikely to succeed. You need both, but the first must be culture.

The building blocks of culture ultimately influence how people behave. Those behaviours, the visible elements of a culture, are based on the invisible elements of beliefs and values. The beliefs and values are enormously powerful. They act like the roots of a tree – without them the tree cannot flourish.

All businesses have their own culture. If you don’t define and set your culture then one will still emerge, but it may not be what you want it to be. Culture can be a major reason why people join your business and stay, either as employee or clients. Equally it can be the reason they leave.

Increasingly purpose, (a Company’s Mission), is important to consumers who are making purchasing and loyalty decisions which are heavily influenced by their degree of alignment to a business – based on its mission. If you, as a business owner/leader, don’t know your mission then your staff and customers can’t. Articulating your mission is arguably THE first task of a leader and starts to set your business culture. There is more, but this is the key starting point of Foundational Culture™.

Get your culture right and you unlock the true potential of your people. They, (and you), become Sustainably Engaged. In doing so you all deliver more productivity and sustained profitability.

Why strategy?

A strong strategy is critical for business success – possibly for survival. Simply put as where to play and how to win, it’s critical to get it right. The absence of a clear and effective strategy means that decision-making is purely judgement-based at the time. Sometimes the decision might be right, but if it is not consistently right the business will not prosper and may even fail. But that process can be slow, insidious and barely discernible.

Once your culture is in place, turning your attention to your strategy is the next logical leadership step. MiViVa can help you. With practical learnings and techniques, you can begin to take charge of your own culture and develop your own business strategy. Once these are in place everything else becomes logical and easier.

Foundational Culture™ series

The MiViVa series on Foundational Culture™ comprises three core modules. Each one is packed with information & tools to allow you to immediately make a change to your business. With a focus on pragmatic and simple advice for the business owner and leader you will learn how powerful culture is in making your business successful, competitive and enduring.

If you’re not sure why not try out the Foundational Culture Light Touch module which covers all three areas but with a major focus on the culture creation.

Performance Management is the process of supporting the individuals in your business to reach their true potential. This takes time, thought, openness and investment but the rewards can be amazing.

We all hope that all of our hires work out well, stay with us and turn into productive, loyal team members. But it doesn’t always work that way. This module gives you the tools and confidence to implement Performance Improvement Plans for those employees who are not performing as you would wish. The goal will always be to improve performance and get everything back on track, but in some cases, the individual and the job aren’t right for each other and the best thing for the business, (and the employee), is to part company. Learn how to do this compassionately, professionally, compliantly and quickly. The speed at which leaders act could mean the difference between keeping your good employees, (who will appreciate decisive action), or losing them.
